Senator Adamu Aliero of Kebbi Central senatorial district, along with two other senators form Kebbi State, has formally defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Sen. Aliero and his colleagues from Kebbi State, Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North) and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South), announced their defection at Tuesday’s senate plenary.
In three separate letters read by the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, the three defecting senators stated their reasons for leaving the PDP, citing security concerns, aligning with the ruling party’s agenda, and ideological differences.
According to Senator Aliero, his decision to defect was “not made lightly,” as it followed a period of deep reflection and critical assessment of Nigeria’s political landscape.
“This decision was not made lightly. I have been a proud member of the PDP, under whose platform I was elected to serve.
“However, politics must never be about personal loyalty to a platform; it will always be about service, solutions and results.
“Today, I made this move in response to a simple question that every responsible leader must ask himself or herself: what is best for the people I serve?
“Over the past month, it has become increasingly clear to me, that the PDP, has become disconnected from the aspirations of the very Nigerians it seeks to lead.
“Internal divisions, lack of ideological clarity and inability to provide a credible forward-looking agenda have made it difficult for leaders like me to pursue the reform and development agenda that our people deserve,” Aliero stated.
He added in his defection letter that his defection was not borne out of personal gains, but because of the “belief that the APC offered a more viable platform through which I could effectively serve my constituents and advocate for progressive policies.”
Aliero and his two defecting colleagues met President Bola Tinubu on Friday in a prelude visit to their defection.
